Hamish joined CCGE in 2020 as a PhD student having graduated with a Master’s in physics from the University of Cambridge. Jointly supervised by Prof Douglas Easton in CCGE and Dr Jamie Blundell in the Early Cancer Institute, he investigates expanding somatic variant clones in blood (clonal haematopoiesis, CH) using evolutionary modelling in population-scale datasets such as UK Biobank. His research looks at disentangling the effects of CH from inherited germline variation in genes such as TP53 and the resulting implications for cancer risk prediction. He also uses similar methods to study the progression of CH across the human lifespan, including childhood.
