The Department offers placements for a small number of Specialised Foundation Programme (SFP) trainees each year in General Practice or Public Health research. These posts offer the opportunity for Foundation year doctors in training to spend 4 months on academic research during the second Foundation year.
We match the interests of the SFP trainees with the ongoing research within the Department and each trainee is hosted for the 4-month academic placement within one of the Departmental research groups. During the 4-month placement they receive specific training and support in the research methods appropriate to their project and prior experience.
Through attendance at group and Department-wide seminars and research meetings, the trainees also have the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of a wide range of applied research methods, including clinical trials, intervention development and evaluation, analysis of routinely collected data, and systematic reviews.
We also encourage the trainees to use the placement as an opportunity to develop links with senior members who will be able to provide support and mentorship for applications for the next stage of academic training.
