Biography
Robert works in the Palliative Care Medical Education Group (PalliMEG) to develop and deliver training for undergraduate students at the Clinical School. He is also a facilitator with the Clinical Reasoning and Communication Skills team, where he is involved in co-developing the Death & Dying course. Robert has a particular interest in creating and evaluating simulation-based education programmes. Recent projects include 'Managing Dying', a multimedia simulation that is in use at several medical schools across the UK, and 'Managing Uncertainty', a large group video-enhanced patient care experience. He is currently in the process of setting up the Care of Dying Adults simulation course. It will use hyperrealistic manikins, professional role players and patient monitoring equipment, allowing medical students to practice being a resident doctor looking after a patient in their final days of life. Robert regularly teaches medical students on symptom control in advanced disease. He also sits on the Simulated Clinical Encounter Examination (SCEE) working group to develop medical finals assessment stations. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a master's degree in medical ethics and law. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree, researching how simulation can be used to foster psychological resilience and train medical students to deliver care in the last days of life.
