Biography

James is an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow and Gastroenterologist whose research explores the use of novel risk stratification approaches to prevent and aid earlier diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Background and experience

James qualified in Medicine from the University of Oxford before training in the East of England firstly as an Academic Foundation doctor, then as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow, and more recently as a Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology.

Prior to coming to Cambridge, James was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley where he completed a Master’s in Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Sciences. While in the USA, James worked as a visiting research fellow at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, collaborating with Dr Jeffrey Lee’s and Dr Douglas Corley’s research groups on projects relating to the epidemiology of postcolonoscopy colorectal cancer.

Research

James’ research focuses on the use of individualised risk assessment to improve colorectal cancer screening and surveillance. By tailoring the timing of colonoscopy to each patient’s cancer risk, his work aims to reduce unnecessary procedures to minimise complications and optimise NHS resource allocation.
