Biography

Dr Stephen Kaptoge is a senior statistician at the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU), where he has worked since 2005. He is a graduate of the University of Cambridge (PhD Epidemiology 2005, MPhil Statistical science 2000) and University of Nairobi (BSc Mathematics 1998).

Research

Dr Kaptoge has strong interests in applied statistics and epidemiology (principally cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis), which mainly involves meta-analysis of individual participant data (IPD) in large-scale collaborative studies to assess the relevance of biomarkers, lifestyle factors, and genetic risk factors to disease, with potential to improve scientific understanding, risk prediction, and public health. He leads the development and implementation of applied statistical methods for IPD meta-analysis [123] and provides overall statistical support to the CEU research programmes.

Dr Kaptoge has specific epidemiological interests in studying the relevance of inflammation to cardiovascular disease, for which he has performed literature-based meta-analysis [45] and led IPD meta-analyses in the Emerging Risk factors Collaboration (ERFC) [678]. He is currently mainly involved in risk prediction [37] and public health modelling [9]. He is the principal investigator/scientific coordinator of the Vitamin D Studies Collaboration (VitDSC) and is a statistical member of the independent data monitoring committee of the INTERVAL study. He has published key papers in the field of osteoporosis [101112], and has led work packages in the EU funded genetic factors for osteoporosis (GEFOS) consortium, involving collaborative meta-analysis of genome-wide determinants of heel bone properties [13] and assessment of gene-environment interactions.
