Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research means that patients, carers, and the public actively contribute to shaping research, rather than just being participants in studies. This ensures that research is relevant, inclusive, and impactful, leading to outcomes that truly benefit communities.
Why is PPI Important?
- PPI ensures research reflects real patient needs and priorities.
- Improves study design, making research more accessible and understandable.
- Builds trust between researchers and the public.
- Increases the likelihood of research findings being used in healthcare practice.
How Can You Get Involved?
There are many ways to contribute to our research:
The easiest way to get involved in primary care research at the PCU is to join the Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) Patient & Public Involvement (PPI) panel. Find out more about the panel here.

For Researchers
Are you a researcher who is interested in building PPI into your research? Our team can provide advise and support, access to an established PPI Panel, training for research teams and wider resources.
Do you require any PPI training? The NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre, hosted by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with the University of Cambridge, coordinate a range of tailor-made training sessions for researchers. Access the training here.
