Shabina Hayat started her career in virology at St Thomas’ Hospital London, although she has always had an interest in epidemiological studies and public health. She started working for EPIC in May 2002 and as the Research Coordinator for the EPIC-Norfolk group implements strategies as agreed by the Management Committee. Shabina works closely with the EPIC Principal Investigators, collaborators, and staff to ensure that the research is conducted in accordance with ethical principles and consistent with good research practice. She has responsibility for managing staff and students within EPIC as well as for coordination and management of the project. She is also a member of the Management Committee, which steers the direction of the EPIC-Norfolk Study.
Shabina had overall responsibility for the Third Health Examination (EPIC-Norfolk 3) which was successfully completed in December 2011 on 8623 participants in the age range 48–92 years. Here the focus was to repeat measures taken at previous health examinations to look at relative changes over time and included three new areas associated with major causes of loss of independence and increasing disabilities in later life, that is cognitive decline, loss of mobility and loss of vision. An important finding from the EPIC-Norfolk 3 was that although in general, impairment and decline increases with age, there is still a broad range of function, with some participants in the oldest age group performing better or with better function and health than those in the youngest group.
