Title: | How do medical students approach uncertainty in palliative care? |
Project Description: | The General Medical Council’s ‘Outcomes for Graduates’ document (2018) states that graduating medical students are expected to be able to recognise uncertainty, manage it , and communicate it openly and sensitively with patients and their advocates. They are also specifically expected to be able to evaluate clinical uncertainties involved in caring for patients who are approaching the end of their lives and utilise appropriate communication techniques and strategies in relation to these.
Through qualitative analysis of final year medical students’ palliative care reflective case reports, we hope to gain a better understanding of how medical students interact with uncertainty, specifically in relation to prognosis and existential matters. This information will then support further development of undergraduate medical education approaches to uncertainty. |
