Title: | Associations between Research Activity and Patient Health Outcomes |
Project Description: | ARAPAHO, led by University of Manchester, in collaboration with University College London and University of Cambridge, aims to explore the associations between research activity in general practice and patient health outcomes. Although research traditionally has impact through implementation into routine care, there is increasing interest in whether participation in research itself drives better performance. The bulk of patient contacts are through general practice. If research participation improves outcomes, achieving those benefits through general practice could improve population health. However, the evidence that research activity improves outcomes mostly comes from secondary care. The same benefits may not occur in general practice. We aim to recruit GP practices with different profiles of research activity and outcomes in the East of England and talk to the staff and patients as well as other stakeholders in the Clinical Research Network. We will undertake qualitative interviews in around 6 GP practices across the East of England. We will ask study participants about their experience of doing research, organising research and how they perceive or feel research impacts on patient care. Through qualitative interviews with patients, staff and other CRN stakeholders, we will aim to answer the following questions:
