Title: | LEADS: Learning from Experiences of the ADDITION Diabetes Study . Identification of the opportunities and barriers to implementation of screening |
Principal research question: | This qualitative study is exploring the experiences of staff involved in screening for and intensive management of diabetes as part of the ADDITION Study. This provides an opportunity to explore the opportunities for and barriers to screening for Type 2 diabtetes if screening and intensive management were to be recommended more generally. |
Background: | MREC reference : Eastern Region MREC 02/5/54 (Substantive amendment to ADDITION Study) |
Methodology description: | This is a qualitative study of the experiences of practice staff and the study team involved in the ADDITION study. Using purposive sampling according to speed of completion of screening, response rates and prevalence of previously undiagnosed diabetes, we have conducted semi-structured interviews with practice staff involved in the screening programme, including the lead GP for diabetes, the lead nurse for diabetes, the practice manager and the screening nurse. In particular we will compare staff experiences in practices that performed well in screening and intensive management, with practices that encountered difficulties. The criteria set by the National Screening Committee require that adequate staffing and facilities are available for testing, diagnosis and treatment prior to the commencement of a screening programme. The findings of this study will help to identify factors that ensure successful roll out of a screening programme. The interviews have been transcribed and are currently being analysed. |
Sample group description: | Four members of the ADDITION study team and 18 Practice staff working at six practices have been interviewed. These included: Health care assistants (3), Practice nurses / nurse practitioner (7), Practice Managers or assistants (4), GPs (4). |
Outcome measure description: | Factors which facilitate and inhibit successful screening for Type 2 diabetes. |
