Title: | A Randomised Controlled Trial to Assess the Feasibility, Acceptability and Effectiveness of Tailored Web- and Text-based Facilitation of Smoking Cessation in Primary Care |
Principal research question: | 1. To assess the acceptability of the intervention among the nurses and the participants. 2. To assess the feasibility of the intervention. 3. To estimate the short-term effectiveness of the intervention in increasing the quit rate compared with usual care alone. |
Methodology description: | The design will be a 2 parallel group randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing usual care (Control) with usual care plus the iQuit system (Intervention).
Participating smokers will be randomised by the iQuit computer program during the consultation with the nurse such that there will be approximately equal numbers of intervention and control participants in each practice (Individual level randomisation stratified by facilitating nurse). |
Sample group description: | Current smokers, aged 18 -75, able to read English and can provide written informed consent, seriously considering quitting smoking. Have a mobile phone and are familiar with sending and receiving SMS text messages. |
Outcome measure description: | The primary outcome measure of effectiveness will be self report of being abstinent from smoking for at least 2 weeks at 8-week follow-up from randomisation date, as assessed by postal questionnaire or telephone interview by a blinded research interviewer. |
