Principal research question: | I – Uptake of screening for diabetes is higher following a traditional, didactic invitationcompared with an informed choice invitation II – Amongst those who attend for screening, intentions to change behaviour to reduce risks are stronger following an informed choice invitation compared with a traditional invitation |
Methodology description: | Individuals will be randomly allocated to receive one of two types of invitation to attend for diabetes screening (a) a traditional didactic invitation or (b) an invitation facilitating informed choice. |
Sample group description: | 1200 men and women aged 40 to 69 years in the top quintile of risk for diabetes in the primary care setting. |
Outcome measure description: | The primary outcome is the difference between groups in attendance rates at screening. The secondary outcome is, among attenders, self report of intentions to change behaviour to reduce risk. These will be assessed overall and stratified by level of social deprivation. The results will inform a series of seminars to consider their implications for public health and equity in the delivery of all national screening programmes, using a range of philosophical and ethical frameworks. |
