Professor Stephen Morris is appointed as the new RAND Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Cambridge. He will be based in the Primary Care Unit in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, and will co-direct the Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research, with RAND Europe Chief Economist Jon Sussex.
Professor Morris will move to Cambridge from his position as Professor of Health Economics at University College London, where he leads an extensive programme of research in health economics. He worked previously at the Health Economics Research Group at Brunel University, the Imperial College Business School, and the Department of Economics at City University.
He has knowledge, skills and expertise in health technology assessment and the economics of service and delivery interventions, and has been involved in many studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of health innovations. His special interests include the economic impact of centralising specialist health care services, the costs of child maltreatment and domestic violence and abuse, and the economics of genomic medicine. Currently, he is leading an investigation of coordinated care for rare diseases. He is co-Director of the Rapid Service Evaluation Team, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Service and Delivery Research (HS&DR) Programme Funding Board, and leads the Health Economics and Data Theme within the NIHR Children and Families Policy Research Unit. He is lead author of a major health economics textbook (Economic Analysis In Health Care).
Professor Morris has attended several major committees, including the NIHR HS&DR Programme Funding Board, the NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research expert sub-panel, the NIHR Public Health Research Programme Research Funding Board, and the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Funding Committees. He was formerly Vice Chair of a Public Health Advisory Committee at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and Joint National Organiser of the Health Economists’ Study Group.
Professor Morris will be joining the Primary Care Unit on 1 June 2019.
