This Abbeyfield Foundation-funded PhD student will be part of a team investigating Anticipatory Prescribing (AP) for people at the end of their life in care homes. AP is the supply of injectable medications ahead of need, which enables prompt administration of medication for pain and other symptoms in the last days of life. There is a limited evidence-base for this practice which is encouraged as best practice. The study will include: a systematic literature review of prescribing in care homes towards the end of life; an ethnographic study of AP in care homes; and a retrospective case notes review.
