Research and teaching at the Primary Care Unit
We are part of the Primary Care Unit, where 140 staff and nine research groups are producing world leading research outputs on a huge range of topics relevant to primary care. The Unit integrates its clinical and academic research programmes with teaching – from undergraduate modules right through to PhD and Academic Clinical Fellowships – and so there are outstanding opportunities for our students and GP tutors to pursue research interests.

General Practice is a key part of the curriculum at Cambridge
In the Clinical School, student education builds on the scientific basis of medicine studied as the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos in the first three years of the Cambridge degree programme. Our clinical curriculum is grounded in the principles of scientific enquiry and evidence-based medicine. It is broad-based, encompassing primary, community-based and hospital care.
We are based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, offering the opportunity to learn and develop your career in one of the most exciting and fast growing biomedical centres – not just in the UK but in the world.
Student teaching is centered in Cambridge, with many sections of the curriculum delivered in a network of clinical sites – including our team of GP tutors in general practices throughout the East of England. All our teaching partners are formally associated with the Clinical School.
General Practice at Cambridge
A large proportion of the clinical curriculum is delivered in General Practice. More and more of our students see GP as a possible future career. In 2017 22% of Cambridge-qualified students selected GP as a career destination at F2.
GPEG works with our Clinical School colleagues and our large team of GP tutors to ensure that all Cambridge medical students, whatever their career plans, get the very best learning opportunities in primary care.
