Led by Dr Rosanna Fennessy and Dr Simon Noah Etkind (PELiCam research group, Primary Care Unit,) and funded by Addenbrookes Charitable Trust (ACT). Working with colleagues at CUH and Kings College London, the study will use routinely collected hospital data to understand changes in palliative care referrals over time.

Over forty percent of people die in hospital; they and their families benefit from access to hospital-based specialist palliative care services to meet their physical and psychosocial needs. However, little is known about how population changes may affect hospital palliative care caseloads.

Through the Electronic Health Record, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a rich dataset of palliative care activity spanning ten years, and this project will use anonymised data to build a detailed description of changes in the palliative care caseload. Working with our public and clinician advisory group, we will then use this information to project possible future needs. This new knowledge will enable development of responsive and equitable hospital palliative care services, now and in future.
