Richella graduated in medicine from University College Cork (Ireland) in 2004, and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (Ireland) in 2007. She moved to Cambridge in 2010 to commence integrated academic and clinical training in palliative medicine as an Academic Clinical Fellow. She was awarded an MPhil in Clinical Science (Translational Medicine) from the University of Cambridge in 2012. Following this, she was awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) doctoral research fellowship, which enabled her to undertake a PhD at the University of Cambridge. She joined the Primary Care Unit in March 2016 as a Clinical Lecturer in Palliative Care and is a member of the Palliative and End of Life Care Group.
Richella’s PhD explored the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in people suffering from chronic breathlessness, who were receiving supportive or palliative care services. She is interested in the relationship between biology and symptomatology, with a particular interest in the mechanisms underlying the symptom of chronic breathlessness.
