Prior to joining the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) at Department of PHPC – University of Cambridge in April 2013, I completed my doctoral research at University College Dublin, Dublin – Ireland. My PhD research was done in a population derived from the Anglo Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT) and in collaboration with other cardiovascular consortia which include EchoGen, HyperGen, CHARGE and the Framingham Heart Study. The research primarily focused on the identification of genetic markers associated with phenotypes which are markers of cardiovascular disease risk and the application of these findings in cardiovascular risk prediction and prevention.

Research Interests

My research interests are; 1. Developing/Extending and fine tuning computational methods for the analysis of human genetic data and 2. Identification of genetic biomarkers related to cardiovascular disease pathogenesis. Currently I am involved in the design and implementation of computational methods for genetic data analysis in population based cohorts recruited as part of ongoing cardiovascular research at Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) at Department of PHPC, University of Cambridge.

Background

Elizabeth Brickley graduated magna cum laude from Williams College in Massachusetts in 2010 with a BA and honors in Biology and a concentration in Maritime Studies. As a two-year Dr. Herchel Smith Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Elizabeth earned her first MPhil with Distinction in ‘Environment, Society, and Development’ in the Department of Geography and her second MPhil with Distinction in ‘Epidemiology’ in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. In August 2012, Elizabeth began her PhD with support from the National Institutes of Health- Oxford Cambridge (NIH OxCam) Scholarship Program. As an NIH OxCam Scholar, Elizabeth’s research is jointly supervised by Dr Angela Wood of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at Cambridge and Dr Patrick Duffy of the Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Research Interests

For her PhD, Elizabeth is studying the epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum-related anemia at the mother-child interface. Using data collected prospectively in cohorts of pregnant women and children living in Tanzania and Mali, Elizabeth will compare the risk factors for severe malarial morbidity between differing transmission intensity settings and will investigate the longitudinal nature of the risk factors in maternal and child health. Understanding the relative contribution of severe malaria risk factors over the life course of early child development will inform the development of more successful therapeutic measures to mitigate the adverse health consequences of P. falciparum infection during the first five years of life.
